Not sure if it helps knowing or not, but they site uses an automated service from Let's Encrypt to get the certificate. It expires every 90 days and has to be replaced before them (likely requiring them to restart the service). There are scripts out there too help automate this - but things break sometimes :/
This could be helped if they put Cloudflare in front of the server, Cloudflare would manage the SSL we see, and would also help alleviate some of the load on the server. It's a free service, but requires a little bit of work to get it set up - but not a terrible process. Best part is, their base service is free.
