On some other forum I have seen a lot of discussion on the use of 5w-30 weight oils in our engines, a bunch of stuff about quieting hemi tick, all kinds of stuff about which oil filter is best. What are your guys thoughts on this, which oil is best to use, who makes the best filters?

When I had my 6.4 it was noisy on the factory recommended PUP, sounded like a thrashing machine(no, really)on Amsoil AZF, was quiet for a good while on Red Line 0W40, but stayed quiet the longest on 5W40 Red Line. I chose to use the Mopar SRT filters, but Royal Purple(filters NOT oil), and WIX XP get good reviews. The theory being to avoid paper filters if you plan to take advantage of synthetic oil's longer change interval.

Not trying to start an oil war, just my experience battling Hemi Tick. Red Line was the solution for my 6.4. YMMV.

I hear ya, I’m new to the Hemi, so I’m just trying to get the opinions of people with experience with this. I’m still using the PUP for now. Still using Mopar filter for now...

I mean 0w vs 5w are cold flow properties... when the oil is up to temp, they are both 40.
I really don't see how it makes a difference once it is up to temp...

I would guess the additive pack are what likely make more a difference..

I noticed on the other threads that amsoil made it tick, was it ticking before the amsoil?

So I got my oil changed and tires rotated at the dealer...$130.00

I will be changing it myself from here on out, probably stick with Pennzoil Platinum Ultra 0W-40 and a mopar filter. Anyone know what this should cost for oil and filter?

It’s always been a ticker I do believe. Not sure if amsoil made it worse. I’ve always had diesel so I’ve been use to engine noise. Until reading on the forum did I realize others 6.4 dont do it. I’m going to go with PUP next change to see what happens

I use PUP 0w40 with the Royal Purple 10-48 filter and the engine is quiet.

I use PUP and the mopar filters. I have a wix Xp filter to try this next go-round.

I change the oil when the engine starts to tick at startup which is right on the 5,000 mile mark each time so far. that started as a coincidence but I pay more attention now.

I bought three cases of PUP the other day for $43 each (6qt each) to stock up. Takes 7 quarts so I would say ~$60 per oil change with filter if you DIY

Why’s that? I don’t have any reason to defend them. I just feel like it’s been good oil in my truck so I keep using it. Change my mind, I’m open to suggestions

Long ago (up through probably the 70's maybe 80's I believe) Pennzoil was pretty famous for sludging up engines really bad, especially if you didn't stay on top of oil changes. I think if I recall correctly, Pennzoil had a lot of paraffin in it that led to the sludging. I think Quaker State had the same issue too. Like I said, their oil now is not their oil of old. I have no doubt nowadays that it is a good oil and if you are happy with it that's good. I just can't shake the sludge stigma haha.

So after much reading tonight on the good old internet, it appears there are only about 4 oils that advertise as meeting FCA's MS-12633 oil spec, only a couple of which are your easier to find brands. Mobil 1 is not one of which advetises meeting the FCA spec. It appears I will probably be running Valvoline or I may just bite the bullet and stick with the PUP.

Amazon seems to be the cheapest by far for Pennzoil ($43/case of 6), and it makes me a little cautious due to Amazon's history with counterfeits. I ordered it by the case, and it looks legit, but haven't used it yet. The WIX XP filter looks off in the pics though, I'll be ordering that elsewhere.

Been running Quaker State Ultimate Durability Gen 2 5W/30 with great results in many vehicles. No tick. Ow/40 Mobil 1 tests almost as good.
